About Me

My name, as you know if you are here, is Elaine Burkett. I grew up in North Carolina in the United States, but I moved to Utah a few years after getting married. Many, many writers say that they have always felt the call to write or create. Often they write their first story as a child or at the very least before graduating high school.

That’s not me.

For most of my life, I considered myself particularly uncreative. I knew I could take an existing idea and improve it, but I considered that closer to engineering than to creativity. I was very much a math and science sort of girl, even looking at the world in black and white, though I did not realize I was doing so.

Despite my distinct preferences for the science side of life, I have always been an avid reader and a studier of human behavior. Pride and Prejudice was one of my favorite books from the moment I first read it in my early teen years. In fact, my youngest child’s middle name is Elizabeth. Another longstanding favorite was Lord of the Rings and Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series.

Once I get my blog and newsletter going, I will gradually include more details of my life journey and how and why I became a writer, but the tale is too long for this simple introduction. I will only say that my world view and my understanding of myself shifted when I became chronically ill in 2012.

My writing is deliberately low angst and often low in drama. It is for those who love to read but who don’t want the stress or emotional intensity of drama and angst, especially when it is pointless. Instead, I focus on character and relationship development. My goal is to provide low-stress entertainment to help my readers relax from the difficulties of life.

A Note About Generative AI

I have not ever and will not ever use generative AI in any part of the writing process. Occasionally it has been unavoidable in the research process, but I do my best to fact-check my sources. My earlier books use generative AI in the cover art simply because the profit potential did not merit hiring a dedicated artist. If I had not used it, I simply would have used basic clip art, so I have not taken work from anyone. Beginning with The Duke of Derby, I am shifting my cover art to more realistic images to minimize how much I rely on AI for anything.

About My Author Portrait

This painting is of Lady Henrietta Godolphin, 2nd Duchess of Marlborough suo jure (in her own right). As far as I could find, she is the only English duchess suo jure before the twentieth century, though there were a few countesses. While I would rather not use my actual portrait, I think Lady Godolphin makes a good enough stand in. I particularly like the fact that her gown, while clearly of good quality, is not overly extravagant, nor is her hairstyle.
